Presentation Description
We are in our fifth decade of CPAP use. The technical evolution led to more options, comfort, and feedback for its treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The irony is that despite all this progress, many well-funded clinical trials show no reduction in cardiovascular disease and mortality. This presentation reviews theoretical benefits and harms of untreated OSA, the potential benefits and harms of CPAP, where KPAP may fit in, and the incorporation of lifestyle therapies and weight reduction as sleep center-directed interventions.
Learning Objectives
Identify and explain an example of diet-inducing atherosclerosis in the presence of intermittent hypoxemia
List two endogenous circulating substances that appear adversely affected by higher levels of CPAP
Describe the results of the first NASA study on OSA
